Therapy is an opportunity to talk about whatever issues are important to the client (individual, couple, or family) in a safe, confidential space while having a trained and objective person as a guide in working through the thoughts, feelings, and real-life implications of the situation. Therapy is a collaborative process that requires an active role from both the client and the therapist for change to occur.
The first session will be an initial assessment to discuss the client’s history, presenting concerns, and needs for treatment. During this first session, the client will have the opportunity to review office policies, privacy, and confidentiality, as well as determine whether or not they are comfortable with the therapist.
It’s crucial to have a positive working relationship with your therapist, so it’s recommended that the client and therapist meet 2-3 times to build a therapeutic alliance before deciding whether or not the relationship will continue. The therapist should provide the client with referrals of specialists or trusted colleagues if they feel someone else might be better able to work with the client.

Each client’s situation and needs are different. Generally speaking, clients begin to feel relief shortly after beginning (if they are open and forth coming with their thoughts/feelings). Progress can be realized anywhere from 5 sessions to 12 when clients employ the coping skills learned in therapy. Of course, this is dependent on the nature of the client’s concerns.
